the Colonial Office dated 4th October, 1892,

a copy of the same report and also a despatch from the Governor to the Secretary of State of 20th August, 1892,

approving the recommendations of the Chief Justice that when the Official Receiver acts as a trustee of Bankrupt Estates his accounts should be subject to a thorough audit by the Local Auditor.

The Controller and Auditor

recommendations.

Under these circumstances, Sir Charles Ryan has no option but to give directions to examine the Accounts in question.

With reference to your suggestion that the auditor should receive a fee for this additional work, the Controller and Auditor General as at present advised, is unable to entertain any proposal for an increase of your emoluments.

He trusts, however, that with Mr. Bowring's assistance you will be able to make the necessary examination, the instructions for doing which were drawn up pending the appointment of a successor to the late Mr. Davies.

If, however, you are unable to

carry out the extra work with the present staff of the Audit office I am to request that you will forthwith report the circumstances with a view to bringing the necessity for extra clerical assistance to the notice of the Secretary of State.

I have etc.,
